It comes from the desert plant Salvia Hispanica, a member of the mint family. It's origin is believed to be Central America and was a staple in the ancient Aztec diet.
They have gained attention as a superfood; being an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acid and an excellent source of fibre (10 g per ounce). Chia also contain protein and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc.
There are many ways to incorporate it into your diet; eat raw sprinkled on cereal, add to granola, pancake batter, baking, add to smoothies, sprinkle on yogurt or add to homemade salad dressing. They can also be used as an egg substitute when added to water ( 1 tbsp chia:3 tbsp water- let sit until resembles the texture of raw egg white).
Chia absorbs the liquid they are added to and expand.
